Dear Sui,

I wanted you to have this earring, to take care of in the event I should begin to forget what it was and how it came into my possession. I have been carrying it around with me for almost 40 years, through 10 countries across a couple of continents. I first found it in my pocket back in 1968 after what we used to call a "date" with a girl I knew. It was during the Christmas break, and we had gone from Milwaukee down to the Chicago by train, and I was showing her my room in the dormitory on East 63rd Street. We were supposed to see some art exhibits that day, but once we got to my room we started to do what young people do, and the result of it was this earring somehow ended up into my pocket. It's not terribly beautiful: just one of those screw-closures designs for women who don't have their ears pierced, which was something not everyone did back then, or at least not at 16 or 17. It has her initials on it, and I suppose it is not of much use without its partner. I wonder where that is now?
